Seed backups are simple physical backups of your seed words, etched into steel. Effectively this means that your Bitcoin is backed up by steel, and as long as you have control over these words, your Bitcoin is safe. 

This dramatically reduces the chance of losing your seed words to fire, water or other forms of damage.
